Curious About Chakras? Here's a Simple Place to Start
Have you ever heard someone mention chakras but weren't quite sure what they are or why they matter?
If so, you're not alone.
Over the years of practicing Reiki and working with clients, I've found that one of the most common questions people have is: 'What exactly are chakras, and how can understanding them help me?’
Many people first hear about the chakra system when they begin exploring Reiki, yoga, or meditation. The word itself can sound unfamiliar or even a little mysterious. Yet at its heart, the chakra system is simply another way of understanding ourselves.
Originating in ancient India thousands of years ago, the chakra system describes seven primary energy centers that are traditionally associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. While we can't see these energy centers the way we see muscles or bones, many people find that the chakra system offers a meaningful framework for self-reflection, personal growth, and holistic wellness.
One of the things I appreciate most about the chakra system is that it encourages awareness rather than perfection.
Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" it invites a different question:
"What needs my attention today?"
That simple shift in perspective can be incredibly powerful.
A Tool for Awareness
In my practice, I often remind clients that healing isn't about becoming perfect. It's about learning to listen to ourselves with curiosity and compassion.
Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, disconnected, or simply exhausted, the way you're feeling can offer valuable clues about what your body and mind may be asking for. The chakra system provides one way of exploring those clues.
Rather than viewing ourselves as "broken," we can begin to notice where we might benefit from a little more balance, support, or self-care.
For me, that's where the real value of the chakra system lies.
How Reiki and the Chakra System Work Together
People often ask how Reiki and the chakras are connected.
During a Reiki session, my intention is to support relaxation and create a space where the body and mind can settle. As a Reiki practitioner, I also pay attention to the chakra system as one of several ways to better understand where someone may be experiencing imbalance or where gentle attention may be helpful.
Although the chakra system has its roots in ancient spiritual traditions, I don't view it as a religious practice. Instead, I see it as a framework that encourages self-awareness and helps me support clients in a holistic way.
Many people are surprised by their first Reiki session. They often tell me they felt deeply relaxed, noticed warmth or gentle sensations throughout their body, or simply experienced a sense of peace they hadn't felt in quite some time, if ever. While every person's experience is unique, these moments often encourage people to become more aware of how closely connected their physical, emotional, and mental well-being truly are.
My Journey with the Chakra System
The chakra system became meaningful to me when I began my own Reiki journey, but it wasn't something I immediately understood on a deeper level.
When I first learned about the chakras, I did what I often do when learning something new—I gathered information. I had the facts, the details, and pages of notes written down. But having the information was different from knowing how to make it meaningful in my own life.
I needed guidance. I needed time to explore the meditations, practices, and experiences that helped me understand how this knowledge could become something I could actually use.
Looking back, I realize I may not have been ready to fully incorporate that information into my daily life yet. Maybe I needed to experience other things, learn other lessons, and grow in other ways before it truly made sense.
That may be true for you as well.
Sometimes we come across information at exactly the right moment. Other times, we hold onto something until we are ready to return to it with new understanding.
My hope is to provide a deeper, more meaningful way for you to explore the chakra system—not just as information to read, but as something you can connect with and apply in your own life.
Even if you take away just one idea, one practice, or one moment of awareness, that may be enough to begin creating more calm, more peace, and more balance in your everyday life.
For me, that continues to be the gift of this journey: learning to pause, listen, and reconnect with myself.
An Invitation to Explore
Whether you view the chakras as energy centers, a tool for reflection, or simply a different way of understanding yourself, I hope they encourage you to pause and check in with how you're feeling.
You don't have to believe everything you read or understand every aspect of the chakra system for it to be helpful. Sometimes simply asking yourself, "What do I need today?" is enough to begin.
I've created a companion guide introducing the seven main chakras and the qualities traditionally associated with each one. See the link below (or visit: Resource Library). My hope is that it serves as a simple starting point for your own exploration.
Remember, healing isn't about achieving perfection.
It's about becoming more aware, more compassionate with yourself, and discovering the practices that help you feel grounded, balanced, and connected.
Whether that's massage therapy, Reiki, meditation, time in nature, mindful movement, or something entirely different, I hope you find the tools that resonate with you and support your own journey toward well-being.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of your wellness journey.
Until next time, take good care of yourself.
With gratitude,
Jen
